Digital Concept Art - The Year I Can't Remember

This collection of concept art was made for an elective in my second year of college called 'Science Fiction and Futuristic Narratives'. Our task was to create a concept for an original science fiction story in a medium of our choice. I chose to draw a series of digital work showcasing the most important aspects of the story concept I was trying to tell. All artwork was drawn in IbisPaint X on a Samsung Galaxy Tablet. The text on the poster art was added in Adobe Photoshop.

My story concept follows up-and-coming technology innovator William Everest, who wakes up one day with an entire year missing from his memory. During that year, the apocalypse appears to have taken place. Aliens have invaded Earth and brought along a deadly disease called ‘The Rot’ that’s taking over the planet, and to top it all off, gravity has gone haywire and ripped his home city of Toronto into a series of floating rocks in the lighting-storm filled sky... and if that wasn’t weird enough, Liam has a terrible, sinking feeling that it’s somehow all his fault. Then he meets Maxine, an aspiring coder with a strange soft spot for their terrifying alien invaders. She seems to be the only one in the world who shares his year of memory loss… And the only one in the world who seems willing to help him figure out how to right the wrongs that he doesn’t remember committing. The story itself revolves around Liam trying to piece together the events of the last 12 months. His most recent invention, a doorway that was supposed to allow people to travel to locations around the Earth in mere seconds, had backfired during a corporate presentation and instead opened a gateway into a parallel dimension. The ‘alien invaders’, dubbed by humans as the Elkan, are actually refugees who fled through the newly opened portal to escape their homeworld, which has been taken over by The Rot. The Rot, a parasitic disease that is transmitted by airborne spores entering the bloodstream, slowly rots the host from the inside out, feeding on its internal organs and breaking them down into dark purple goo. Together, Liam and Max will have to convince the remainder of humanity to put aside their differences with the Elkan and work together to close the portal and rid the world that’s become both of their homes from the deadly disease that will surely end both species.

These creatures look dangerous and animalistic, but are actually quite docile and display human-like behaviors. The image on the right shows an Elkan who's been infected by The Rot.
